What is it about?

Underground rail stations serve as lucrative “gallery space”, for on their walls “hang” advertising, public service, and other messages. And by looking at some of these in a particular month, one can obtain a “snapshot” of a moment in time of a city - in this case, Hong Kong society in 2022. These can then be contextualized and related to the wider context of situation leading to a more holistic impression of the city (of Hong Kong) that had led up to this particular “snapshot”.

Why is it important?

This article is important because it gives a sense of a particular time and place - Hong Kong - a "snapshot" of this society, when a lot has happened both locally and globally - hopefully readers will look at their own societies with new eyes about the situation in history they find themselves in.

Perspectives

As the writer of this article, I have lived in Hong Kong for nearly 27 years and have experienced all the ups and downs of the region since 1997, as well as closely studying its politics and becoming involved in political activities myself. As both an observer and participant of Hong Kong society - and as a non-Chinese Hongkonger, I can also be seen as also an "outsider" - thus giving a multi-perspective of what has happened in this unique location.
