What is it about?

The chapter explains why Polish patrons accepted, or even encouraged, new types of tomb monuments, including those for children. Their culture, philosophy, piety, foreign travels, social aspirations, rivalry, and visual taste are discussed as factors which might facilitate the introduction of novel artistic concepts to the local conservative tradition.

Why is it important?

Artistic innovations are justly connected with the responsible artists, but to be successful, they should be introduced in the right time and place, i.e., be acclaimed by prepared viewers. Therefore, their rapid success in Poland is partly explained by the quality of their public.

Perspectives

Possibly this chapter will show interesting aspects of the Renaissance culture in Poland and its intimate connections with classical and Italian world.
