What is it about?

People in premodern Arabic-Islamic societies did not only know about the consumption of narcotics for the sake of inebriation, they also knew about the addictive quality of narcotics. This article shows, how addiction was perceived and described, which aspects were written about and when and how an idea of treatment came about.

Why is it important?

By understanding how and when addiction was perceived as such, how it was described and what was done about ist, we can paint a more detailed picture of society and particularly about the aspect of narcotics.

Perspectives

After having written the other chapters on use and abuse of narcotics for my book, it was a logical consequence to look at what in our modern terms would be addiction. It was interesting to see what is in the very early texts about narcotics and how that changed throughout the centuries and what was written about the addictive quality of narcotics and about its victims.
