This publication examines the complex legal risks associated with the rapid advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) in the absence of comprehensive regulations. It analyzes how current international legal frameworks, such as the European Union’s GDPR, the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights, and the OECD Principles, address issues like data protection, bias, accountability, and ethical AI development. Highlighting regulatory gaps, the paper underscores the need for a unified, global legal framework to ensure responsible and ethical AI deployment.

Why is it important?

As AI continues to transform industries and societies, the absence of robust legal regulations poses risks to privacy, fairness, and security. This research provides timely insights into how existing international legal instruments can guide AI governance while revealing the limitations of current approaches. By advocating for a global legal framework, this work aims to foster ethical AI development, mitigate risks, and enhance public trust in AI technologies.

Perspectives

Writing this paper was both a challenging and rewarding experience as it allowed me to delve deeply into the dynamic and rapidly evolving intersection of artificial intelligence (AI) and international law. Collaborating with colleagues and engaging with diverse perspectives on AI governance has been intellectually stimulating. My hope is that this publication sheds light on the critical gaps in existing regulations and inspires meaningful discourse among policymakers, legal scholars, and technologists. Personally, I am passionate about fostering ethical AI development, and this work reflects my commitment to ensuring that advancements in technology are balanced with respect for human rights and global ethical standards. Above all, I hope this article encourages collaborative efforts toward creating a more equitable and secure AI-driven future.
