Why is it important?
In addition to introducing the book and its authors, this chapter addresses how surviving remnants of medieval church culture were perceived in a Scandinavian past, and the many factors that have influenced their survival into the present. It probes the shifting status and changing physical form of sacred objects that survive in considerable numbers across Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Iceland.
