What is it about?
Tracks the story of Herbert E Randall as a minister, then missionary to Egypt, of the The Holiness Movement Church in Canada (1895-1906). Following his baptism in the Spirit in 1907 at the Hebden Mission in Toronto, he then transitions to ministry within the emerging Pentecostal movement in Canada and USA, before returning to Egypt as a Pentecostal missionary (1912 to his death, 1938).

Why is it important?
Provides a glimpse into the motivation, theology and practice of a particular community of Holiness and Pentecostal ministers and missionaries at the turn of the 20th century. Reflects interactions between Western/Euro-centric missionaries in Ottoman Egypt under British Protectorate, and ordinary Egyptians, both Muslim and Coptic Orthodox Christians. Randall serves as a catalyst for the emergence of two distinct Christian faith communities in Egypt (Holiness and Pentecostal).
Perspectives
Having spent part of my early formative years amongst Holiness churches in Eastern Ontario, Canada (Randall's origin) and then living in Egypt (1988-89) working with the Holiness churches founded by Randall, this project has been a longstanding personal interest.
