What is it about?
We initially developed the online Indiana University Plagiarism Tutorials and Tests (IPTAT) for our own students. Our original goal: to help students better understand plagiarism in order to avoid it. That was in 2002, now over 21 years ago. Since then, usage of IPTAT by others has increased almost exponentially. More than 1.1 million students from over 200 countries and territories have passed Certification Tests since 2016. IPTAT can be accessed at https://plagiarism.iu.edu.

Why is it important?
Recognizing plagiarism is important in order to avoid committing it. Passing a Certification Test provides evidence that students can recognize plagiarism. If they later plagiarize, instructors should not accept the excuse that students do not know what plagiarism is.
Perspectives
Writing this chapter was a trip down memory lane. I initially led the student design team which created the original tutorial and test in 2002. I provided leadership in the major redesign in 2015, and have been the steward for more than 20 years. I continue to maintain this website during my retirement years, tweak it as necessary, and respond to student and instructor questions and concerns.
