What is it about?

We describe the natural ecosystem of Lake Naivasha, Kenya, from the time it was first studied by European scientists and interfered with by colonial settlers and their government, to the present – the past 120 years. We , examine and explain changes to the lake's ecology as a consequence of alien species and agro-intensification since Independence.

Why is it important?

Few other lakes has =been so intensively studied in ways which link their social science to their ecology. Few other lakes have undergone such dramatic changes in their ecosystem structure, yet still have such economic value.

Perspectives

The senior author has studied this lake since 1982. Many other studies have taken place before and after this period, but none have been able to understand the ecosystem with the depth which this timescale provides.
