What is it about?

The present volume explores for the first time the concept of synagonism (from “σύν”, “together” and “ἀγών”, "struggle”) for an analysis of the productive exchanges between early modern painting, sculpture, architecture, and other art forms in theory and practice.

Why is it important?

How can we rethink the notion of antagonism in visual culture under the current political circumstances, where antagonism in neoliberal fashion seems to take the overhand? The problem and quite traditional notion of Paragone does not reflect as an art theoretical humanistic construction the collaboration and cooperation between artists and arts. Synagonism, a neologism in English, may offer a fruitful counterweight to the all too individualistic notion of antagonism. It hints at the polis, the common wealth, rather than the single ego.

Perspectives

The notion of Synagonism questions the somehow too distinct division between media, genres and the senses or more general between body and mind, nature and culture, notably even before Modernism.
