The article is an overview of the ways in which the study of the very earliest printed books - one printed before 1500, generally called incunabula - have developed in the context of book historical studies more widely.

It challenges the long-held view that 15th-century books are in some way different, more worthy of study, than ones printed after that. It suggests that we should abandon our traditional special focus on these books.
