What is it about?

The purpose of this study is to analyse selected broadcasts of RFE’s Polish Broadcasting Service prepared by Rev. Kirschke in 1952–1981, some of which are available online in the Radio Liberty service. The audio content is juxtaposed with press materials from the monthly Na Antenie / On Air, as well as other archival sources, memoirs and studies. The first chronological point of the study is the beginning of Kirschke’s work for RFE, while the second is the year when his collaboration with the station ended, just before he left for London. Although he was formally employed until 1975, when he reached retirement age, he continued to edit broadcasts for RFE as a freelance contributor for several more years.

Why is it important?

The analysis covers not only broadcasts in which Kirschke participated himself, but also those conducted by an informal team dedicated to religious matters, including Krystyna Miłotworska, Aleksandra Stypułkowska (alias Jadwiga Mieczkowska), Wiktor Trościanko, Włodzimierz Sznarbachowski, Czesław Straszewicz, Tadeusz Zawadzki, Eugeniusz Romiszewski, Tadeusz Nowakowski, and RFE correspondents in Rome: Kazimierz Komła, Karol Wagner and Marek Lehnert. The team employed a variety of radio genres: documentaries, discussions, featured broadcasts, chats, reportages, talks, news bulletins, radio plays, interviews, etc.

Perspectives

The article contains the latest research on the religious broadcasts of Radio Free Europe's Polish Broadcasting Service from 1952 to 1981, which has not yet been compiled. I hope it will be of interest to media researchers.
