What is it about?
Despite decades of research, most health disturbances in dairy cows occur in the first weeks after calving. To support farmers with advise in order to improve the performance of their dairy cows after calving, an alternative approach to the transition period is required.

Why is it important?
This alternative approach is based on currrent knowledge of metabolism and physiology of dairy cows, but interpretation of this knowledge extends way beyond the 'old-school' ideas on, among others, negative energy balance and hypocalcemia.
Perspectives
I hope this book provides valuable tools for advisors at dairy farms, by connecting scientific data with practical information and guidelines for preventive measures. The ultimate goal should be that the health and performance of dairy cows during their transition period is improved after implementation of advise based on the content of this book.
