What is it about?

The value of time, and its careful use, has been part and parcel of many religious and philosophical traditions, including the Islamic one. 20th century Muslim scholars and Islamist activists, however, have given the principle a decidedly modern twist by linking it to the notions of self-help, self-improvement, and pious productivity, all mean to enable Muslims to meet the challenges of the present age.

Why is it important?

Modern notions of why it is important for Muslims to pay careful attention to time are little known. They deserve attention as they highlight the many ways Muslims have drawn on both their own tradition and on modern Western notions to develop what they present as Islamic answers to modern questions.

Perspectives

I enjoyed writing this article not only because I am deeply interested in the issues of identity, modernity, and entanglement to which it contributes, but also because I wrote it in honour of a scholar I particularly like and admire and to whom the present Festschrift is dedicated.
