Why is it important?

The ethical and legal questions about autonomous vehicles discussed by this article are important because current ethical and legal frameworks may not provide answers to all ethical and legal questions raised by autonomous vehicles. In other words, this is a relatively new topic, which raises new ethical and legal questions.

Perspectives

Will there be fully autonomous self-driving vehicles operating on public streets anytime soon? Even if there won't be, there will be partly automated vehicles that will participate in public traffic, and these already raise many of the ethical and legal questions raised by fully autonomous vehicles. If our cars take over the tasks usually performed by human drivers, how should the cars behave in dangerous scenarios and who is responsible when something goes wrong? These are pressing questions society has to grapple with.
