What is it about?
In his prose piece "Goethe schtirbt" Thomas Bernhard portrays the senile genius in an almost surreal setting. Bernhard’s satirical replacement of Goethe's canonized last sentence, ‘Mehr Licht!’ / ‘More light!’ with ‘Mehr nicht!’ / ‘No more!’ is analysed in the context of the cultural history of last words, and with regard to the significance they had in the case of Goethe and his glorification.
