What is it about?

The definition of Bacchae (or bacchantes) has always had a negative connotation in Roman literary sources, as attached to frenzied women who threatened the public order and morality. However, the picture gets more nuanced as also material sources are taken into account.

Why is it important?

Whereas literary sources use the bacchae as a negative example to reinforce the distinction between masculine and feminine social domains, material sources reveal a more fluid reality.

Perspectives

It was a pleasure to write this article for the edited volume in honour of Prof. Dr. Emily Hemelrijk, not only one of the best scholars I had the privilege to work with, but also a kind, supportive and patient tutor. Besides, working at this article gave me the opportunity to explore new aspects of my field of study.
