What is it about?

The Euphrates and Tigris river system is heavily developed by its riparian states. At the center of these developments are large dams. Large dams have substantial effect on the rivers. Therefore, unregulated development by one state may negatively the overall utilization of the river system and intensify tensions between Iraq, Syria and Turkey. Thus, effective international regulation of the development and utilization of Euphrates and Tigris is necessary to support stability in the region.
