What is it about?

This article proposes a four-step model for a constructive course alignment. Besides clarifying the messy concepts of learning objectives (LOs) and learning outcomes, the article also highlights the necessity to initially start with formulating LOs. The article also reports on the importance of integrating SMART criteria and Bloom’s Taxonomy to guide an appropriate formulation of LOs and learning outcomes, the development of instructional content and activities, and the use of assessment formats. The constructive alignment of these four steps supports meaningful student learning. Our four-step model can be adaptable across disciplines and educational contexts. It offers colleagues an easy-to-use and flexible tool for designing inclusive, outcome-driven courses.
