What is it about?
In the light of the decision recently issued by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea in the Mauritius/Maldives case, the contribution provides an analysis of the legal effects of the authority of judicial decisions in international law and, in particular, of the advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice.

Why is it important?
The role played by precedents in international law is usually addressed with regard to their bearing on other judicial decisions and their contribution to the development of international law. The contribution offers a novel interpretation of the legal effects of the International Court of Justice’s advisory opinions as precedents vested with substantive res judicata effects.
