What is it about?
In this manuscript we report the results of the dendrochronological, art historical and archival research that we have conducted on seventeenth century panel paintings that have a mark (‘4MM’) stamped at the back. We have concluded that the same panel maker made all panels. Our objective was to elucidate where the workshop of this panel maker was located and how he operated (in terms of wood provision and woodworking practices). Our findings shed light into the hitherto unstudied topic of panel production, in this case from the Rotterdam area in the northern Netherlands, a topic that has not been researched earlier.
