What is it about?
The influence of Western music in the Northeast is more than in any other region of India. Folk music, regional film music, and Indian film music are developed as popular culture. The study revealed that Western music genres like rock, rap, and pop are integral to Northeast India’s music culture. In line with global music culture, rock bands in Northeast India are in operation that molded the music culture. Youths, particularly students, are ardent followers of Western music culture and developed a youth sub-culture.

Why is it important?
This publication has explored the trend of popular culture and the unique phenomena of cultural stratification in India's North East. It will help researchers to carry out more such work on different dimensions of this music culture.
Perspectives
The music culture in Northeast India is assimilated to Western music. Folk and regional music are undermined by Western music because of the new westernized youth culture. India’s music culture developed into popular music culture because of the Bombay film industry. Bollywood further came in contact with Western music, which led to the development of music consumption in India. Frankfurt School of thought stated that music and film are various products of the culture industry. So westernization of music in India's North East is the evidence of growing culture industry globally.
