What is it about?
This paper looks at the non-religious in Latin America and the secular paradox they face when they come into contact with religion. Our analysis shows that this tension is common in the experience of Latin Americans, influenced by social ideas like "atheist thanks to God." These social ideas show how religion and secularism are connected in the region. Latin America is a place where capitalism and Western modernity are embraced and rejected at the same time. The paper looks at specific countries like Mexico and Argentina to see how religion and secularism affect the experience of non-religious individuals. Our findings show that people's ideas about religion are linked to the region's history of Catholicism and to political secularism. The non-religious tend to focus on social bonds while limiting secularism to the intellectual level. This research therefore helps us understand secular identity in Latin America.
