What is it about?

This paper uses story, specifically a story of the prophet Samuel and the authors’ own memories, to reach a phenomenology of utterance, or the Call of the Other and the response. Working across Jewish and Catholic philosophical traditions, we locate the moment of prophetic teaching in the fragile interval between the Call and the response, and with reference to Samuel’s teacher Eli, reaffirm the teacher’s role in the freedom of the student to respond as a responsible person in our shared world.
