What is it about?
This paper explores how GIS (Geographic Information System) can transform the study of military history in modern Asia. Using the Battle of Hong Kong in 1941 as an example, it shows how GIS goes beyond text-based accounts by visually depicting the battle and contextualizing diverse human experiences at war. The article evaluates the effectiveness of GIS-based interactive maps in visualizing battle progress, reconstructing the battlefield, and integrating historical data. It suggests applying this approach to studying other military campaigns in rapid-changing urban environments. The paper also acknowledges limitations and emphasizes critical analysis of data visualization, source usage, and interpretation.
