What is it about?
What distinguishes a great general from a mediocre one? Since ancient times, military writers have tried to answer this question by examining the cognitive abilities of great captains. In the eighteenth century, the concept of the coup d'oeil came to the fore. However, it was ambiguous and could lead to confusion. Stripped of its visual connotations, it is still associated with the skill of the consummate general.
