Why is it important?

The South China Sea dispute is one of the most sensitive contemporary strategic issues. Freedom of navigation is a central concern for the US and many other nations. The Arbitral Award is potentially the most significant development in the dispute so it is important to consider its implications for freedom of navigation.

Perspectives

From my own perspective, this article is an opportunity to contribute to defusing tensions in the region but also to explore the limits of law in addressing this dispute.
