What is it about?
The article explores the world-view of fans of metal music in order to understand them better. Meeting metalheads, as they are called, is described as a spiritual and hermeneutical exercise. It ends with a short theory of pain, which seems the most important theme in metal songs from the band Machine Head.

Why is it important?
Teachers and youth ministers are often part of mainstream or dominant culture. They can experience metal fans as strangers. In order to establish a productive relationship with young people it is necessary to dig into their life world. When connected there are more opportunities to guide young people in their identity development
Perspectives
I think this is an important article to teachers or youth minister not familiar with metal music. It gives them the opportunity to find arguments against prejudice with regard to this subcultural group of metalheads. It may foster an open attitude and contribute to a better understanding of these sometimes lonely or bullied youngsters.
