What is it about?
Mummified fossils are unique and extremely rare; however, they are extraordinarily important for understanding both biotic evolution and ecology in geological time. In this paper, we present anatomical characters of mummified wood belonging to the genus Syzygium from the Miocene of Guiping Basin, Guangxi, South China. It represents the earliest and unambiguous fossil record of Syzygium in eastern Asia. Our finding not only enriches the fossil record of this genus, but also contributes to the understanding of its phytogeographic history.
