What is it about?
17th-century paintings from the Low Countries (present-day Belgium and The Netherlands) are known for beautiful and convincing material depictions. Skins, furs, fabrics and materials such as metal or fruit pulp are painted so well that these seem very realistic to us still. This article treats how material depiction was discussed in the 17th century and why it was appreciated.
