What is it about?
The Carnations Revolution of 25 April 1974 in Portugal set in motion the decolonisation of the Portuguese empire, Indonesia took the initiative to seek contact with the novel Portuguese authorities regarding the colony of Timor and both countries entertained several rounds of talks between May 1974 and November 1975. This essay surveys those talks, and highlights the fact that the two countries failed to reach an agreement. The main issue that was never resolved may be said to be a disjunction between the often twin concepts of decolonization and self-determination
