What is it about?
Roman period writers tell us about a system that associated vowels such as o, a and e with musical notes. When comparing the characteristics of these vowels with the treatment of musical harmony in ancient melodies, in the remains of ancient instruments, and in the resonators built into ancient theatres, a coherent understanding of ancient harmonic hierarchies emerges. Some concepts were unconsciously employed by ancient composers, and the philosophical interpretation in terms of gender by an ancient Platonist writer suddenly makes much more sense than had been assumed.
