What is it about?

Two fragmented doublepipe instruments from the early third century BCE, found in a female and a male grave near Athens, are reconstructed and evaluated. They are equipped with a mechanism of sliding keys, allowing modulation between different 'harmoniai'. Forming the first evidence for the kind of instruments that would have accompanied the chorus and soloists of ancient Greek drama, they illustrate the development of music theory and music notation in the late Classical and early Hellenistic period.
