What is it about?

Islam is today Europe's second largest religion and different European states have found different ways to relate to their Muslim minorities. During the 1990s, Muslim Councils were founded in several European countries. These were often established at the initiative of government authorities in an attempt to control and direct indigenous Muslim congregations. One country, namely Sweden, stands out from other European countries in this respect. In this article, the emergence of Sweden's first Muslim Council is analyzed and discusses why Sweden differs from other European countries in this respect.
