Facilitating Academic Engagement with Society: A Bonding Social Capital Approach to Self-Determination

What is it about?

Higher education institutions are expected to respond to societal challenges. One mode of response is academic engagement with society, which refers to knowledge-related collaboration between academic and non-academic individuals or organizations. This study examines how academic engagement with society can be leveraged through a supportive environment established by higher education institution managers. The study contributes by providing insight in how self-determination theory and bonding social capital are suited as a research framework for explaining academic engagement with society. Practically, this research offers recommendations on motivational strategies to create a supportive environment for Triple Helix collaborations.
