What is it about?
Resilience, the capacity to endure and maintain well-being during adversity, is a crucial aspect of human functioning. Mindfulness, a practice focused on cultivating present-moment awareness, has garnered attention for its potential role in enhancing resilience. However, the underlying mechanisms through which mindfulness exerts its influence on resilience have remained insufficiently explored. We delved into this relationship by investigating whether hope, operationalized as a cognitive-motivational trait, serves as a mediator between mindfulness and resilience. We adopted a cross-sectional survey design with a sample of 391 adults from the community. The findings revealed a statistically significant partial mediating effect of hope on the association between mindfulness and resilience. In essence, individuals who displayed higher levels of mindfulness also exhibited elevated levels of hope, which, in turn, correlated with heightened levels of resilience. This mediation model underscores the potential explanatory role of hope in the pathway through which mindfulness enhances resilience. In summary, the study contributes to our understanding of how mindfulness contributes to resilience by highlighting the intermediary function of hope. By fostering mindfulness, individuals cultivate a sense of hope, which fortifies their ability to adapt to life's challenges.
