Slum growth can be observed in many African cities. This work explains how the collaboration between informal estate agencies and private small-scale investors leads to the construction of housing for the poorest strata in Abidjan, a coastal West African metropolis.

Why is it important?

Low cost urban housing has shifted from self-built to rental housing in many cities of the Global South. Research result shows how insecure land tenure was used as an opportunity for investment, speculation and slum estate business as well as a way to provide urgently needed affordable housing.
