Why is it important?
Northern Amis (Formosan) is an understudied language. The present article presents original data that have not been previous reported in the linguistic literature.
Perspectives
Nortern Amis belongs to the languages with final stress. It is surprising that word stress is associated with a lowering contour in non-final prosodic phrases, which is the opposite pattern from what we know from better studied languages with word-final stress, such as Turkish and French. It would be interesting to know whether this pattern appears in other languages of the area or family.
