What is it about?

The creation of a database of all of English poetry from the middle ages to the end of the 19th century and its publication on CD-ROM in 1989-1993. How it was marketed and sold at a price of £25,000 a copy and the response to it by the scholarly community.

Why is it important?

It is important because it was the first commercially successful large database in the humanities created by keying original printed texts. It also transformed research in the English language and in English poetry by enabling users to search on any word or phrase in over 160,000 poems.

Perspectives

It was the best publishing idea I ever had and one of the most profitable.
