What is it about?
Information and ideas can be delivered through discourse and just as well power itself can be implemented and ideology can be promoted. That is why one must always keep in mind that language constitutes a social practice determined by social structures and ideology lies on “who tells what to whom for what purposes”. Symbols stimulate profoundly this process by pointing out to new directions and new possibilities. In this way, the need experiencing the members of a particular group for ‘belonging’ and ‘identity’ it is fulfilled. Erdoğan’s discourse combines events of the past with government’s achievements, be it technical, institutional etc. His rhetoric style is structured on an AKP-unique ideological basis promoting a post-Kemalist perception not only of nationalism but also of Turkey’s worldview. His persuasive method involves the recital of famous poems containing allusions (historical, sentimental, national etc.) and conveying messages pertaining to the particular moment that the speech is delivered.
