What is it about?
Could your gut microbiota make you obese? In this study we compared obese and healthy Lebanese people's gut microbiota. The difference found among the obese and healthy are linked to the role of anti-inflammatory properties, lower body mass index, satiety and weight loss among the healthy and may play a role in the protection against obesity and type 2 diabetes. There are association studies that have linked microbiome alterations with obesity and overweight. However, the results are not always consistent and there are a lot of heterogeneity in the literature. One difference that could be noted in the literature is that not all obese have the same altered gut microbiota and this might be related to ethnicity and the country of residence. The aim of this study is to highlight a step forward towards understanding the interaction of the gut microbiota and health and that specific treatments might be required based on specific ethnic groups and the country of residency to treat obesity.
