What is it about?

New DNA barcodes for 63 species of hyperiid amphipods Hyperiid amphipods are an abundant and ecologically important group of crustaceans living in the open ocean. This paper examines the genetic diversity of 273 specimens collected along a meridional transect in the Atlantic Ocean. DNA barcodes are short segments of DNA that can be used for species identification when compared to a reference database. This study provides new DNA barcodes for 63 morphologically-identified species belonging to 34 genera and 16 families, including 26 species with no prior information in publicly-available reference databases. We found substantial amounts of genetic variation within several species pointing to possibly new and undiscovered species.
