What is it about?
Philosopher Richard Rorty's work presents a pragmatic theory of liberalism that he insists entails a progressive politics with a high degree of economic redistribution. However, he also endorses a conception of individual autonomy that is in tension with his progressive politics. This article suggests that his individualistic liberalism would be more theoretically coherent if he dropped his commitment to progressive politics and instead embraced FA Hayek's pragmatic, free-market classical liberalism.
