What is it about?

Alliterating word-pairs pervaded the history of Germanic languages and literature; this paper includes earlier usages of the pairs in Old and Early Middle High German texts, with occasional references to later, and contemporary usage. Catalogues and analyzes the circa 400 alliterating word-pairs found in manuscript W of Gottfried's "Tristan and Isolde", tracing any earlier attestations to their earliest sources, while demonstrating the use of the rhetorical device in Gottfried's masterpiece.

Why is it important?

Few devices are used as widely as the alliterating word-pair. They connect intimately with central themes of this important Arthurian romance.

Perspectives

Part of a larger project tracing for the first time comprehensibly the early history of the alliterating word-pairs in German (Old and Middle High German).
