Missionary Ironies

What is it about?

The work of evangelical missionaries to Amazonia is often decried. Missionaries are accused of bringing right-wing politics and capitalism to Indigenous People. But the missionaries themselves are often aware that things are more complicated than that. Although they might want to limit the effects of materialism, they know that they have sometimes increased them. Although they might want to limit the reach of socialist politics, they know that they sometimes produce Leftist politicians. Taking missionaries seriously enables us to better understand the ironic effects of their work in Amazonia.
