What is it about?
The article is based upon an Oral History-project under the title ‘Religiöse Vielfalt an Wiener Schulen der Zwischenkriegszeit (ZwieKrie) / Religious Plurality at Viennese Schools during the inter-war period’. It analyzes individual memories of religious plurality as recalled by a set of 24 contemporary witnesses visiting Viennese schools during the 1920s and 1930s. On this basis, the project proposes that religious plurality has been very much part and parcel of the living conditions during the inter-war period in Vienna. The analyses show in which ways, the pupils of the 1920s and 1930s have been aware of religious plurality during the inter-war period; and how they reconstructed their respective perceptions today. The project thus underlines the significance of socio-cultural milieus as well as family upbringing and highlights the ongoing traditions of religious plurality in Vienna.
