What is it about?
In this article I analysed tweets under the #BeingFemaleinNigeria hashtag as an approach to understand the state of women's rights in Nigeria. I am particularly keen to contribute to research that aims to define what African feminism(s) is/are. Using Twitter to gather the lived experiences of these women was interesting as it demonstrated both the benefits and limitations of using tweets in research. My analysis of the tweets also highlighted the similarities and differences in the experiences and grievances shared by Nigerians in Nigeria and those in the Diaspora (namely South Africa, USA and the UK). I hope my research demonstrates the need to define feminism in Africa using empirical research that looks into the lived experiences of African women.
