What is it about?

The aim of this article has been to identify and map potential innovation diplomacy actions in Denmark and Sweden using the ‘functions of innovation systems’ approach. The study provides an insight in the innovation diplomacy concept and its two strands. Using a well-established approach by Marko P. Hekkert, Roald A.A. Suurs, Simona O. Negro, Stefan Kuhlmann and Ruud E.H.M. Smits, the study presents the empirical analysis of the role and activities of Ministries of Foreign Affairs (MFAs), including the results from the interviews with career diplomats. Moreover, the study aims to take a closer look at the national approaches to innovation diplomacy (including mapping diplomatic innovation activities in both countries), as well as to identify areas for future research. The findings could also be used to derive useful policy advice to other European MFAs to streamline their processes on innovation diplomacy.
