What is it about?

The European Parliament has gained powers in EU external relations after the Lisbon Treaty. This article shows the breadth of action that the European Parliament undertakes in global affairs. It analyses the capacities, powers and forms of diplomatic action of the European Parliament through the lens of its promotion of EU founding values (democracy, human rights, rule of law) and through the establishment of links with various regions around the world.

This is significant because it demonstrates the proactive approach of the European Parliament in representing EU citizens' interests, preferences and values in the shaping of key global and regional challenges. The European Parliament is the world leader in international diplomatic activism.
