What is it about?
This research looks at how small-scale farmers in Hungary and Germany are working to make local food systems more sustainable. By speaking with 38 producers, the study shows that many farmers are trying to innovate—such as improving their products or using digital tools—while also keeping traditional methods alive. These efforts help them respond to environmental concerns and meet what consumers want. But they often face challenges like complex regulations, limited time and money, and unfair market conditions. The study finds that tradition and innovation don’t have to conflict—when supported properly, small farmers can be powerful drivers of change. Helping them with better policies, advice, and funding can strengthen rural communities and make food systems more local, fair, and resilient.
