What is it about?
Iraq is going through a wide range of environmental challenges that are putting further pressure on the economy and security in a country that is already suffering from a fragile situation in various sectors of life. The water crisis is one of the most prominent challenges facing the country, who’s many of its features have begun to appear clearly in the southern parts of Iraq, as it is exposed to harsh dry climate conditions that contribute to the scarcity of water. Climate change is not the decisive factor in the water crisis in southern Iraq. Rather, there are other factors at play, as the policies practiced by Turkey and Iran are main cause for the decline of water volumes in Tigris and Euphrates rivers and their supporting tributaries. This water blockage coincided with the absence of national strategic plans to sustain water resources in Iraq, which eventually aggravated the intensity of this crisis.
